Young workers are struggling to survive in Spain and many are leaving, concentrating the population of older citizens and upsetting the country's demographic, economic and political balance. With over half of under-25 workers out of work, emigration is the only hope for many. `
The situation is different than other historic exoduses because this time the most educated, prepared workers are leaving the country. But the negative consequences are the same. Between January and September, 54,912 Spaniard emigrated. This is 21.5% more than the same period in 2011. Emigration levels this high are bad news for the Spanish economy and society, because without young people to contribute to both, the country will hardly be able to attract future generations.
