Healthcare cutbacks

The national healthcare system is saving 700 million euros by reorganizing its service offerings.

Cost-benefit analyses are being applied to all parts of the current system, and differences between autonomous community offerings will be eliminated. Some operations won't fall under benefit plans (such as sex changes) that the health care system is paying for now. Also, patients will have less access to services such as assited reproduction.

The change will go into effect in November. These are difficult measures, and they will likely receive a lot of pushback. But in a crisis like this, saving lives has priority over less-vital health care services.
