Ending absenteeism in the public sector

The government will not provide incentives for civil servants to show up to work as Sanlúcar de Barrameda's socialist local government has done. It is paying its employees 90 euros per month if they don't miss work.

But the two-year plan that it put before the EU did include measures to put an end to absenteeism within national government. The measure will attempt to cut pay by 50% for the first three days a person taking off extra time from work or staying home because of illness or injury not related to work.

This measure will surely cause some civil servants to protest, especially those who abuse their cushy jobs. But the measure will also do away with government employees trying to game to system, hopefully creating space for those among Spain's 5.7 million jobless workers who want to find work.
