Unemployment at historic high

It's always bad news when unemployment goes up, but even worse is the fact that it has just passed historic high levels not seen since 1993. Second quarter data published yesterday by the National Statistics Institute are considerably worse that what was predicted and show that 5,693,100 people are without work. That?s 24.63% of Spain's working population 17.4 million.

This figure is doubly alarming because it refers to a quarter that should have been favorable for jobs because of historically high tourist activity and the fact that the national government has yet to apply a massive cutback in regional government jobs.
