Canal Nou cutbacks fall short

Radio Televisión Valencia said yesterday that the Expediente Regulador de Empleo (ERE), an administrative procedure that employers must follow when requesting temporary cuts to labor contracts or collective dismissals, will ultimately affect 1,295 out of 1,695 workers that it has on payroll.

The cut is not enough to guarantee the future of Valencia's public television station that since its inception has become, regardless of its politics, like a job placement agency for the People's Party and the Spanish Socialist Workers Party.

With 2011 revenues topping 17 million euros, payroll at 73 million and 1.3 billion in debt, the best measure would have been to close shop for good. Investigators supported this decision.

This payroll cuts paves the way for other regional governments that have a similar problem on the table: inefficient and moribund public television stations.
