Too many AVE trains and not enough efficiency

Airports closing soon after opening, underutilized toll roads on the brink of collapse, and AVE train lines whose construction is not justified given the current passenger demand. The excesses Spain enjoyed during its boom years are attributable to two political parties who enjoyed their power while they had it.

Inefficiencies within the AVE rail system are affecting its high-velocity trains, which are not utilizing existing rails simply because the trains aren't needed.

It is calculated that of the 217 high-speed trains acquired during various phases by Renfe, a third are surfeit. The Spanish government should take advantage of the Ministry of Public Works' proposal to sell AVE to the private sector in order to rent trains to private operators and recover part of the 1.4 billion euros that were invested in the purchase.

It's hard to cover the costs of squandering.
