Op-ed: Angela Merkel could end up all alone

The results of elections in France and the collapse of the Dutch government have shocked Europe. Economic crisis is not only overthrowing governments, but also creating unexpected alliances.

The far-right Le Pen party is trying to support Hollande during the second time around in order to win more votes from the French right, while peripheral countries led by conservative governments would look more favorably on a more conservative candidate leading the race to Elíseo.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy wanted more understanding from Angela Merkel in his first months in office, and it is possible that he is courting the idea that for the near term France putting the brakes on German austerity could invigorate Spain.

If Merkel does not change her methods, she runs the risk of getting zero help from anyone.
