Op-ed: Quality education and efficient management of public universities

José Ignacio Wert met yesterday with regional government advisers to review three billion euros in cuts to education spending. The government will apply the bulk of the cuts to teacher faculty, which means fewer teachers per classroom, more hours taught per teacher and a change to sick day policy. Budgets will not provide substitute teachers if leave does not extend past ten school days.

On Thursday there will be another meeting with the University Board in order to implement the cutbacks in the university space. It is necessary to analyze the number of faculty members and adjust this number to the current demand for teachers.

Good higher education does not mean that some regional governments can allow themselves the luxury of supporting various public universities with too many teachers and not enough students. Quality education and efficient management should be aligned.
