Op-ed: Spain should not give in to labor reform amendments

A photo taken of Luis de Guindos yesterday in Brussels with Jean-Claude Juncker is worth a thousand words. Perhaps the photo would not appear so bad if the Spanish government had not shown signs of weakness when it said it would not meet the EU's deficit requirement.

Rajoy ought to consider how standing firm with recent labor reforms and restoring the international market's confidence in Spain are priorities that his party should promote during Andalusian elections.

Europe and the markets are not expecting Spain to show a sense of responsibility and abide by their promises.

Schauble's strong appearance in front of Ecofin yesterday did not give the Spanish government the freedom to take for granted that it should explain its decision to not comply with the EU's 2012 deficit requirements when it still has not presented a 2012 budget. Yet another time, an image says more than words.
