Op-ed: CiU has strong presence in labor reforms

Congress approved yesterday the passing of a labor reform bill with votes from the PP, CiU, UPN and Foro Asturias. Major changes are not expected, although Catalonia reiterated that supporting workers' rights for the self-employed was the justification behind its voting in favor of the reforms.

That said, CiU is trying to come to an agreement with the PP about a shock plan to boost employment in exchange for backing when the next reforms are put before Congress. Ultimately, it will be very difficult to put current reforms into practice under current conditions.

The parliamentary step of the process should look closely at clarifying aspects of the labor reform that could enable an increase of litigious proceedings or speed up the process for struggling companies to get off the hook by breaking burdensome employment contracts.
