Op-ed: Labor unions losing strength

Labor unions are losing their influence in Spain due to continual intractability and an inability to see the real problems that are affecting the labor markets.

Unions have opposed nearly all reforms within the system and have earned disapproval from young, jobless and employed workers who think that the unions are defending the interests of those who have had steady full-time jobs for a long time.

Throughout labor reforms, the unions have not only lost negotiating power, but also lost other benefits and economic resources. The loss of administrative authorization in EREs -- labor unions received 100 million euros for legal council -- will be a tough blow. Plus, there will be cutbacks to other benefits and training resources.

If the unions want to regain their representation, they will have to make an effort to do so. They have disappointed many Spanish workers.
