RTVE needs to find a strong leader as soon as possible in order to cut their budget by 200 million euros. But Rajoy and Rubalcaba plan to wait until June in order to agree to change the public television company's board of advisers and also officially name a replacement CEO. That is too much time.
Meanwhile, the government is proposing an alternate solution: change article 31, which would give some power to a temporary CEO chosen from current board members.
Doing so would avoid paralyzing RTVE and would buy some time for enacting a critical series of cutbacks while the PP and PSOE agree on the final composition of the RTVE board. The time to act is now.
