Durable Goods Orders (Dec.)

We expect durable goods orders to rise 2.0% in December, though the outcome will depend on an unreliable concept ? December seasonal factors for aircraft orders. The balance of durables probably had a mediocre month with a tepid gain in core capital goods and a slight drag in other durables. Everything but aircraft should be between moderately weak and moderately positive, but aircraft has the potential to swing orders heavily in either direction.

New Home Sales (Dec.)

We project a small increase in new home sales in December, to an annual rate of 320,000. The market for single-family new homes is improving but remains depressed, based on December?s single-family housing permit numbers. The NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index has climbed 11 points in the last four months, but in January, just 25% of respondents had a positive outlook. December?s release will close the books on a miserable year, as new home sales in 2011 set a record low.
