Carrefour to wave value-added tax on food products for seniors

Global grocery chain Carrefour has launched a plan to help its older customers, offering discounts up to 8% on 4,000 products. With this campaign, Carrefour aims for families to save between 225 and 250 euros per year.

Carrefour will waive the VAT for 4,000 products, and rebates will vary between 4% and 8% depending on the type of tax levied on each product. In total, about 4,000 off-brand and other brands sold by all Carrefour's stores throughout Spain will be sold with a discount for those older than 65. The group decided to launch the initiative with intentions of helping one of the "most vulnerable segments of society." People older than 65 comprise 17% of the population in Spain.

The campaign includes discounts on meat, fish, fruit, bread, deli, pasta, prepared foods, eggs, vegetables and cheese. According to secretary general Agustín Ramos, these products are the most sought-after by the elderly.
