Op-ed: Spanish crown takes a step toward transparency

Publicizing the Royal Family's accounts signifies an advance for state of Spain's democracy. Further, it opens the door for still greater scrutinizing of other areas, particularly in regard to transportation and security.

Naturally, there will be pressure on all public administrations to do their own due diligence and improve the information that they present to the Spanish people. Currently we are not as transparent as countries near us.

That said, the crown's accounts do not seem so profligate when compared to similar institutions across other nations.

It seems appropriate that only the King and the Prince receive a salary. The rest of the royal family will have to make a living without resorting to less august activities. They should have little trouble finding work.
