Partido Popular says job creation must wait, growth on hold until 2013

Yesterday the Partido Popular (PP) convened so that Mariano Rajoy and his economic advisory team could deliver the following message: the next government's priorities are to fight against a high national debt and create jobs. But the latter goal will not become a reality until 2013.

The future president explained before the National Executive Committee, the highest advisory group in Spanish government, that "economic growth for the year ahead will remain under one percent and predictions for the following year look similar." Even though he confirmed that one of 2012's objectives is to "grow and create jobs," he emphasized the difficulty in doing so.

Rajoy also advised that the struggle to shrink the Spanish national debt "will not positively impact economic growth at first and could even cause some contraction."

Cristóbal Montoro, chief economic advisor for the PP, echoed the same idea. "It is almost certain that we are not going to see more jobs, which everyone knows, before the end of 2012." During an interview with La Cope, Montoro said that the PP is going to inherit the worst political legacy in the history of Spain, including pre-democratic times.
