Op-ed: Spanish economy at a standstill

Because unemployment in Spain is so brutal right now, the end of the crisis will not come soon. In November the number of jobless workers rose by 59,536 to over 4.42 billion.

Social Security enrolments fell by at least 111,782 people, and the government noted that it could close 2011 with a surplus. This would further complicate Spain?s ability to meet the EU?s budget mandate, a key goal for establishing national credibility.

Practically every sector is losing jobs, which indicates that there are no sparks of business anywhere and the Spanish economy is stalling due to a sovereign debt crisis throughout Europe and an outgoing feckless government in Spain.

The generalized paralysis is good enough reason for the new government?s efforts to create measures that will propel the national economy.
