Op-ed: Iberia does away with 'Brahmin' caste of pilots

The success of the Spanish pilot union Sepla originates from the cohesion established during its first years by aviation leaders who came from the military. They were the most experienced pilots and flew the crown jewels of Iberia, Boeing 747s, and were called 'Brahmins.'

They had a great deal of power in gaining security for their future and getting company jobs for their children. This history explains why the labor union is not accepting an agreement that honors salary and standing for pilots now with the airline.

Descendants of the 'Brahmins' are saved for now, but the third generation will be cut loose. Why? The current situation requires that everyone tighten their belts in order to increase competitiveness. And pilots should not be excused from this sacrifice.
