Op-ed: Tricky electric electoralism

The current government has decided to enact a price freeze on power due to increasing costs on other goods and the weight of a 6% increase earlier this year. With this decision, which reeks of electoral politics, the government is deceiving its citizens because the prices will not stay here for long.

Further, their decision will just fatten the tariff deficit until it exceeds the 2011 limit, pushing up the costs of financing this bill at a most inconvenient time and delay an inevitable price increase. Now or later, prices will rise, and the next government will have to deal with a more inflated bill.

Miguel Sebastían is sending a poisoned inheritance to the successor government, who will have to increase the cost of electricity little by little.

The decision to reposition the price increase to next year is nothing more than a deceitful campaign maneuver, smoke and mirrors. The socialist government already used this trick before the May 22 elections in order to create less contention.
