Op-ed: The Partido Popular is shaking up the self-employed

Within its political agenda, the Partido Popular (PP) is reserving a special chapter for self-employed workers. They have been punished severely by the financial crisis. The chapter is designed to ease their financial burdens, especially taxation.

In particular, the VAT tax will only be applied when self-employed workers have billed in accords with the Ley do Morosidad, which expires in just over a year.

The new measures will also advocate for compensation of credits and debits, reform the way self-employed are expected to estimate and pay their taxes, and aid for companies who contract their first self-employed worker.

Under the current socialist government, nearly three million self-employed workers have had to deal with administrative obstacles over and beyond those presented by the economic crisis. The timely measures proposed by the PP could have been put in place much sooner with a positive effect for everyone.
