This week the Comisión Nacional del Mercado de Valores (CNMV) will take on the important job of deciding whether to extend their ban on short selling in the financial sector that they put in place on August 11. High market volatility brought European regulators from Spain, France, Italy and Belgium to take measures intended to slow down significant stock market plunges.
In Spain´s case, the CNMV confirmed that it would extend the extension in order to mitigate damage caused by bearish short sellers during the next 15 days. The ban has been extended for at least three more days until September 30.
Sources from the CNMV explained to elEconomista that at this time they cannot communicate what decision they will adopt going forward, yet they assured that they will continue to analyze market development along with other European regulators in order to decide whether to extend or lift the sanction on short selling.
