Aena to cut debt by 33% by selilng Barajas and El Prat

Elena Salgado's team is finally listening to requests made by Aena president Juan Ignacio Lema in mid-June. The Minster of the Economy has approved Aena's plan to use half of the profits earned from the company's privatization in order to pay down corporate debt. Aetna supervises Spain's primary airports.

The decision resulted from a Comisión Delegada de Asuntos Económicos meeting held in mid-July, according to sources familiar with the process. The Treasury reported on the matter last earlier this month (a report can be accessed on their website) offered a sanguine prediction. Selling two airports, Barajas and El Prat, could bring the state between 3 and 4 billion euros.

The same sources indicate that this amount would be used to reduce a small part of Spain's debt, which exceeds 700 billion euros. However, this figure does not include regional government debt, which is tallied separately.
