Self-employed freelancers have been through a lot throughout the crisis, and now they are going to be subject to increasing administrative tax burdens. They will be required to submit to the federal government quarterly accounting reports with detailed accounting information.
This is a positive measure for controlling tax fraud and tax evasion, but at the same time, the extra time and money that is necessary to conduct the audits is a significant demand and could end up crippling freelancers. This group of workers has already seen its growth decline significantly during the economic downturn.
In the past, workers have pleaded for simplification of the web of bureaucratic procedure and paperwork that freelancers must endure, and it does not look like they will get what they want here. Plus, if the federal administration is increasing anti-fraud measures, it should also increase resources allocated to the efforts such that the entire administrative burden does not fall on the individual taxpayer.
