Catalonia calls off alert following accident in French nuclear plant

Last night the director general of Protección Civil called off the Procicat alert plan, which had been put in place as a preventative measure after an explosion in a French nuclear plant located 230 kilometers from the Spain border.

Protección Civil kept the alert active for most of yesterday in order to keep communication lines open and stay mindful of Spain's radioactive control units, despite the fact that the Nuclear Security Council assured that it had not detected any variability in its radiation measurements and France indicated that there were absolutely no signs of a nuclear leak.

Spanish president José Luis Rodrigo Zapatero quickly initiated a nuclear disaster security plan in order to evaluate what measures to take. Zapatero maintained permanent contact with the French government, and the Nuclear Security Council activated safety protocols along with the Catalonian regional government, whose president Artur Mas explained that the regional government was also monitoring the situation. Yesterday, Mas was put in contact with the Minister of Industry, Miguel Sebastián, who confirmed the French authorities' message that there was no radioactive material leaking after the disaster. The risk of contamination spreading to Catalonia was non-existent.
