The Spanish federal government just announced that it will raise taxes on long-haul shipping vehicles. The vehicles will have to pay 2.8 cents more per liter starting in January, just in time to cancel out the "professional diesel" tax rebate that they usually receive at the end of the year. If indeed it is true that this class of truck wears out highways more quickly and hinders efficient traffic patterns, the small tax increase would be translated across other prices associated with the cost of gas.
This is just another action that the government is taking to pad their accounts after finding out that tax revenues are not sufficient. Now they could reach new highs. Instead of getting out their own scissors, the current government prefers to let the Partido Popular be the evil villain of cutbacks. Cospedal is a recent, prime example. Naturally, taxpayers are going to pay either way.
