Op-ed: If there won´t be reforms, Zapatero should go

During el Ágora de elEconomista (a lobby similar to the US Chamber of Commerce that represents Spanish businessmen and companies), Joan Rosell, the president of CEOE, explained that he would only support Zapatero staying in office until the end of his term if he plans to actually carry out reforms.

But that is something that the Prime Minister has failed to do many times. He should pass the baton considering that we have gotten to these circumstances his systematically failures to uphold management responsibilities. So clearly, it would be consistent for him to ignore advice from an entrepreneur.

Change is necessary, and delaying equates lost opportunities. The reforms are impacting economic figures too slowly, and further delays in implementing reforms will be measured in unemployment and financing hardships for the Spanish economy.

We can´t let it happen to us. Since CEOE has made reasonable proposals, such as evaluating civil servants, fighting absenteeism, shrinking the public sector, or reducing social security contributions that could galvanize Spain?s competitiveness such that the ebbs and flows of the crisis are smoothed out.

Zapatero has done nothing of this sort. And here we are, behind while the rest of Europe recovers. If it hasn´t been done already or won?t happen before March 2012, then nobody can make the government take action. Therefore, the only prudent economic measure to take is to hold elections and replace Zapatero before his term ends.
