Op-ed: Are we paying too much for authors´ royalties?

The Minister of Industry has proposed that the Spanish government think about a new way for authors to collect royalties. The European legal system has already established that our methods are applied indiscriminately.

And now that the SGAE?s abuses have been clearly displayed, a reform is even more necessary.

But if the government is planning to pay for these reforms with its national budget (i.e., with taxpayer dollars), then it would still be in the wrong. It would be equally indiscriminatory if we all foot the bill as in the Norwegian model.

The system has to be changed so that only those who benefit from royalties made on artistic copies have to pay for reform. Further, the new law should clarify what organization is in charge of inspecting and controlling this stream of the taxpayers? money.
