Christine Lagarde is now heading the IMF. Her main challenge will be to fight for a solution for Greece in a way that doesn?t show favoritism toward the Europeans.
Further, she will have to mediate between the United States and China, aiming to coordinate some sticky politics between them.
And she could reorganize the IMF in a way that gives a greater voice to emerging economies. Does she have what it takes? Perhaps. For the first time, the IMF is being directed by someone who has earned her stripes in the private sector.
Lagarde is dynamic, speaks English and knows how to negotiate and mobilize politically. To her discredit, she is not a professional economist, she is part of the European establishment, and she might use her position to launch a political career. She should demonstrate that these factors do not make her dependent when it comes to solve the problems related to the Euro zone.
