Silly pilfering in local governments

It´s strange that a town council, in times of crisis, is putting 72 million euros into electronic trashcans that indicate whether they are full or not. This outlandish example repeats itself in the autonomous and local governments. Basically, they are wasting funds by adding dubious and underutilized agencies, expenses and airports.

According to one study, the extra costs supported by the intrastate administrations are estimated to be around 33 million. And the committee and district councils? debt is around 6.358 million.

In its eagerness to build itself little kingdoms, the CCAA (Autonomous Communities) and municipalities have become absorbed in aping national agencies. They spare no expense and, to top that, demand that the state take care of discrepancies in their compensation funds and a mound of accumulated debt. The CCAA´s debt stops growth.

When the financial crisis, Europe and the markets are forced to embrace austerity, what these administrations should do is just the opposite: get together and ax agencies.

Fusing councils, eliminating committees whose objectives are accomplished in other departments, closing companies and entities run by the autonomous government and examining where every spent euro goes. There´s room to make cuts rather than cry and ask for more money. At least some think so.
