NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks rose further on Thursday, with the Dow and S&P 500 briefly up more than 1 percent after data showed U.S. Midwest business activity grew more than expected in September.
The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> gained 77.12 points, or 0.71 percent, to 10,912.40. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> gained 8.76 points, or 0.77 percent, to 1,153.49. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> gained 14.27 points, or 0.60 percent, to 2,390.83.
Stocks opened higher after strong readings in labor market and economic growth indicators.
