Wall Street slides on bank, consumer shares

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks extended losses on Thursday, weighed by bank and consumer shares, as investors fretted about the pace of the economic recovery and lawmakers raced to sort out the most controversial provisions in the U.S. financial overhaul bill.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> dropped 96.89 points, or 0.94 percent, to 10,201.55. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> fell 12.04 points, or 1.10 percent, to 1,080.00. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> lost 26.91 points, or 1.19 percent, to 2,227.32.
