NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks fell on Thursday as investors worried that the global economy might be in recession following a spate of disappointing corporate profits and outlooks.
Bargain hunting in the beaten-down energy sector briefly lifted the market after the open.
The Dow Jones industrial average was down 74.15 points, or 0.87 percent, at 8,445.06. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 6.33 points, or 0.71 percent, at 890.45. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 14.20 points, or 0.88 percent, at 1,601.55.
