Kosovo parliament opens session on independence

PRISTINA, Serbia (Reuters) - Parliament in Kosovo started a special session on Sunday to declare independence from Serbia, ending a long chapter in the bloody break-up of Yugoslavia.

"Kosovo is turning a new page in its history. We arecommitted to a democratic state for all citizens, incooperation with the international community," parliamentspeaker Jakup Krasniqi told the assembly.

The United States and most European Union members areexpected to recognise the new state. Serbia and Russia arefiercely opposed.
