Several blasts heard in central Baghdad: witnesses

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Several explosions were heard in central Baghdad on Tuesday, witnesses said, but the cause was not immediately clear.

There was no immediate indication of casualties.

Smoke billowed from at least two sites over Baghdad and the shock waves from the blasts, the first large explosions in the Iraqi capital since October 25, rattled windows across the city.

Major bomb attacks in the heart of the capital in October and August killed scores of people, undermining Iraq's fragile security gains in recent months.

Overall violence triggered by the 2003 U.S.-led invasion has fallen dramatically. The health ministry reported for November the lowest monthly death toll of Iraqi civilians in 6-1/2 years.
