Santiago, Sep 10 (EFE).- Chilean police on Thursday arrested two suspects in a robbery last week involving several members of President Michelle Bachelet's security detail, authorities said.
The incident - in which a presidential security team had automatic weapons, radios, ID badges, clothing, cash and other items stolen - occurred when the agents stopped at a gas station to get coffee in the town of Lampa, near Santiago.
Thieves took advantage of the fact that the agents were inside getting their coffee to break into their SUV and steal the guns and other items.
According to authorities, one of the arrested men directly participated in the theft, while the other was tasked with selling the stolen property.
In the operation, police managed to recover the ID badges and a radio that were stolen from the security agents, who belong to the Carabineros, Chile's militarized police, and who after the robbery were relieved of duty.
The two suspects, whose identities were not released, must appear in court on Thursday to be formally charged.
One of the main criticisms of Bachelet's government among Chileans is the relative lack of results obtained in the fight against crime. The president's approval rating in a recent survey by the Adimark consulting firm, showed that 72 percent of those polled disapprove of the way she is doing her job.
