Mexico City, Jul 19 (EFE).- The presumed father-in-law of former Zetas cartel boss Omar Treviño was arrested by Attorney General's Office agents in Mexico City, officials said.
Jesus Fernandez de Luna was detained on Saturday at the Mexico City international airport, the AG's office said in a statement.
"The Attorney General's Office executed an arrest warrant and detained two suspects for the crimes of criminal conspiracy and money laundering," the statement said.
Criminal Investigations Agency, or AIC, agents executed the arrest warrant issued by a court in the Federal District and detained Fernandez de Luna in the terminal.
Fernandez de Luna faces "extradition to the United States as a suspect in connection with the charges of criminal conspiracy and money laundering," the AG's office said.
The suspect was arrested by the Federal Police in southeastern Mexico's Riviera Maya on Friday and taken to Mexico City, where the arrest warrant was executed.
Fernandez de Luna is being held at the prison in Hermosillo, a city in the northern state of Sonora.
Former Zetas cartel leader Omar Treviño, known as "Z-42," was arrested on March 4 in the northern state of Nuevo Leon.
Treviño took over the leadership of the cartel following the capture of his brother Miguel Ángel Treviño, known as "Z-40," in 2013.
Heriberto Lazcano Lazcano, known as "El Lazca," deserted from the Mexican army in 1999 and formed Los Zetas with three other soldiers, all members of an elite, U.S.-trained special operations unit.
After several years as the armed wing of the Gulf cartel, Los Zetas went into the drug business on their own account in early 2010 and now control several lucrative territories.
Lazcano was killed by marines on Oct. 7, 2012.
