Washington, Apr 20 (EFE).- The Secret Service arrested a man who climbed over the White House fence with a suspicious package, U.S. media reported Monday.
Jerome R. Hunt, 54, of California, climbed over the fence on the south side of the White House complex at 10:25 p.m. on Sunday but he was quickly intercepted by agents of the presidential security detail, according to Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary.
The package he was carrying was analyzed and found not to present any kind of threat.
According to CNN, the Secret Service is studying the idea of installing temporary steel spikes on the fence around the White House to prevent another incident of this kind while a better permanent security system is designed.
The Secret Service, the agency tasked with presidential security, has been the target of harsh criticism for several incidents that have placed security at the White House in jeopardy and other cases in which its agents' competence was called into question after unprofessional behavior.
