Gunmen kill former mayor in southern Mexico

Mexico City, Jun 30 (EFE).- The former mayor of Ahuacuotzingo, a city in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero, was killed by gunmen, prosecutors said.

Francisco Quiñones Ramirez "was the victim of an attack perpetrated by subjects who fired several shots at his vehicle on the Chilapa-Ahuacuotzingo highway," the Guerrero Attorney General's Office said in a statement.

Quiñones Ramirez and a relative were traveling from Chilapa to Ahuacuotzingo in a pick-up truck on Saturday when unidentified individuals opened fire on the vehicle, leaving the driver "seriously wounded," the AG's office said, citing statements from eyewitnesses.

The former mayor was taken to a hospital in Chilpancingo, the state capital, where he died, the AG's office said.

Investigators are trying to determine who was behind the attack, the AG's office said.

Quiñones Ramirez served as Ahuacuotzingo's mayor from 2009 to 2012.

The former mayor's son was kidnapped in October 2012 and is listed as missing, media reports said.
