Los Angeles, May 22 (EFE).- Prosecutors in California's Orange County on Thursday formally charged Isidro Garcia with raping and holding captive for a decade a woman he abducted when she was 15.
Garcia, 41, faces possible life in prison if found guilty on all charges.
The woman, who was allegedly forced to marry Garcia and used the name Laura Ortiz, filed a complaint against him last Monday for domestic violence and said that he had kidnapped her in 2004 when she was 15 years old, police said.
"In August 2004, a mutual domestic violence incident between Jane Doe's mother and Garcia was reported to the Santa Ana Police Department, but a case could not be proven at that time. Shortly thereafter, Garcia is accused of kidnapping Jane Doe. He is accused of taking her to a house in Compton and holding her against her will. The next day, he is accused of giving Jane Doe paperwork with a false identity," authorities said in a statement.
Garcia, who went by the name Tomas Medrano, appeared to be a devoted father and husband and was very affectionate, according to testimony from several neighbors who knew the family.
As part of his strategy not to be found, Garcia changed his residence at least four times over the 10-year period and told the young woman that when he had abducted her she had only been in the United States for six months and that her family had stopped looking for her, and he threatened to have her deported.
In 2007, according to the official report, Garcia forced her to marry him and in 2012 they had a daughter.
