Mexico City, Feb 19 (EFE).- Two Sinaloa drug cartel members were captured by federal law enforcement agents and marines in northwestern Mexico, the Attorney General's Office said.
Mario Hidalgo Arguello and Mario Lopez Osorio were arrested during an operation targeting the criminal organization this week in Sinaloa, a state in northwest Mexico, the AG's office said in a statement.
"Mario Hidalgo Arguello is a subject who belongs to the top circle of the criminal organization," the AG's office said, adding that the "two individuals were the targets of the operation."
The operation also resulted in the seizure of illegal firearms, vehicles and more than three tons of drugs.
The suspects and the property seized in the operation were turned over to federal prosecutors in charge of organized crime cases, the AG's office said.
Security forces members found tunnels under two houses searched during the operation "that were used as an escape system and to transport product," the AG's office said.
"One of these houses was used as a warehouse center," the AG's office said.
Prosecutors did not say what jobs Hidalgo Arguello and Lopez Osorio performed for the Sinaloa cartel, Mexico's oldest and largest drug trafficking organization.
Mexican media reported Monday that police and army troops captured 10 suspected Sinaloa cartel members, including the security chief of one of the criminal organization's top bosses.
The suspected cartel members were arrested in the northwestern states of Sinaloa and Baja California.
One of the suspects worked as the security chief for Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, one of the cartel's leaders.
Another suspect was responsible for smuggling narcotics into the United States for the cartel, officials told Mexican media.
The Sinaloa cartel, sometimes referred to by officials as the Pacific cartel, is led by Joaquin "El Chapo" (Shorty) Guzman.
Guzman, considered extremely violent, is one of the most-wanted criminals in Mexico and the United States, where the Drug Enforcement Administration has offered a reward of $5 million for his capture.
The Sinaloa cartel, according to intelligence agencies, is a transnational business empire that operates in the United States, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, the Americas and Asia.
