Mexico City, Feb 18 (EFE).- Police and Mexican army troops captured 10 suspected Sinaloa cartel members, including the security chief of one of the criminal organization's top bosses, media reports said, citing security officials.
The suspected cartel members were arrested in the northwestern states of Sinaloa and Baja California.
One of the unidentified suspects worked as the security chief for Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, one of the cartel's leaders.
Another suspect was responsible for smuggling narcotics into the United States for the Sinaloa cartel, Mexico's oldest and largest drug trafficking organization, officials told Mexican media.
Zambada's security chief was arrested last Thursday in Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa, along with four other people, Televisa reported.
More than 90 firearms, ammunition and over 280,000 pesos ($21,220) were seized from the suspects.
The other suspect was arrested on Friday in Tijuana, a border city in Baja California state, along with four associates.
The suspects were in possession of two firearms, a fragmentation grenade, drugs and two vehicles with secret compartments used to smuggle narcotics.
The National Security Council, meanwhile, said the Federal Police arrested six subjects on drug and other charges in Tijuana, which is located near San Diego, California.
Omar Guillermo Cuen Lugo, "who presumably led" a criminal organization dedicated to the distribution of drugs in Baja California and the United States was among those arrested, the council said in a statement.
Cuen Lugo is likely the suspect who media reports said was arrested for smuggling drugs into the United States.
The other suspect, however, has not been identified by officials.
The Sinaloa cartel, sometimes referred to by officials as the Pacific cartel, is led by Joaquin "El Chapo" (Shorty) Guzman.
Guzman, considered extremely violent, is one of the most-wanted criminals in Mexico and the United States, where the Drug Enforcement Administration has offered a reward of $5 million for his capture.
The Sinaloa cartel, according to intelligence agencies, is a transnational business empire that operates in the United States, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, the Americas and Asia.
