Mexico City, Aug 7 (EFE).- Mexican authorities found 124 kilos of cocaine on a ship that began its journey in Chile and made a stop in Colombia before arriving in the western port of Manzanillo, sources with the federal Attorney General's Office told Efe Wednesday.
The discovery was made last Saturday during a search of the vessel by customs officials, navy personnel and Federal Police officers assigned to the AG's office.
The sources said the ship had departed from Chile and "made a stop in Colombia" before docking in Manzanillo, located in the western Mexican state of Colima.
The cocaine "was hidden in wooden boards," an AG's office spokesman said, adding that it was unusual to find cocaine in a cargo container loaded with lumber.
The AG's office did not indicate which companies were selling the wood or the destination of the shipment, saying it had launched an investigation.
Criminal gangs based in Central and South America use Mexico as a route for smuggling narcotics to the United States, the world's largest consumer of illegal drugs.
The main drug gangs operating in Mexico are the Sinaloa mob, Los Zetas, Los Caballeros Templarios (Knights Templar) and the Gulf cartel, which authorities say have ties with criminal organizations based in Colombia and other countries.
