RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - A fire at a fuel storage facility near Brazil's Santos port, the country's largest, entered its third day on Saturday with firefighters working around the clock to stop the flames from spreading.
Three tanks at the facility run by Ultracargo were still on fire, down from five on Friday. Workers at the firm, which is owned by Brazil's Grupo Ultra, were evacuated and there were no casualties, the company said.
Explosions were heard on Thursday morning at the facility, quickly turning into a blaze that sent a thick column of black smoke into the air. Firefighters doused nearby tanks with water to stop the fire spreading.
"The battle is very difficult," the fire department said on its Twitter account. "Three tanks are still on fire."
Traffic was diverted around the site of the fire, blocking one of the roads to the port. Trucks carrying soybeans and other commodities were still able to access the port through a second entrance, a spokeswoman for the local CET traffic engineering company said on Friday.
