NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks extended losses on Wednesday, dragged down by fears of more credit losses to come for banks, while a further decline in consumer spending heightened anxiety over the impact from the recession.
Highlights:
* Banks led the way down, with the S&P financial index <.GSPF> down 4.9 percent, while Dow component JPMorgan Chase
* The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> fell 232.49 points, or 2.75 percent, to 8,216.07. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> lost 24.93 points, or 2.86 percent, at 846.86. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was down 39.33 points, or 2.54 percent, at 1,507.13.
