NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks slid at the open on Wednesday as fears of more credit losses in the banking sector and signs of further contraction in consumer spending compounded worries about fallout from the recession.
* The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 137.55 points, or 1.63 percent, at 8,311.01. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was down 14.78 points, or 1.70 percent, at 857.01. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was down 23.79 points, or 1.54 percent, at 1,522.67.
