Boeing plane unit to cut 4,500 jobs

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Boeing Co said on Friday it would cut 4,500 workers in its commercial plane unit this year, about 7 percent of the unit total, as the company looks to slash costs in the global economic recession, which has already taken its toll on aircraft orders.

BOEING (BA.NY) which vies with EADS unit Airbus to be the world's biggest jetliner maker, said normal attrition and a reduction in contract labor would account for some of the job losses, but layoffs would also be necessary.

The company's commercial plane unit, based in Seattle, will employ about 63,500 workers after the reductions, the company said, about the same level as at the beginning of 2008. It employed 67,659 people at the end of last year.

Boeing shares fell 24 cents, or 0.5 percent, to $44.54 on the New York Stock Exchange.
