Wall Street gains on auto bailout, techs

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks extended gains on Tuesday after Washington expanded its bailout of the auto industry while technology shares helped boost the Nasdaq.

* The Nasdaq outpaced gains in the other indexes, boosted by shares of big-cap tech companies that have large amounts of cash and are seen as better positioned to weather the economic slowdown.

* The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> rose 141.29 points, or 1.67 percent, to 8,625.22. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> gained 14.74 points, or 1.70 percent, to 884.16. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was up 31.17 points, or 2.06 percent, at 1,541.49.
