NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks extended losses on Thursday as worries over the fate of the proposed bailout for ailing automakers rattled investors, overshadowing energy shares, which had earlier helped support the market.

* The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> fell 141.45 points, or 1.61 percent, to 8,619.97. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was down 16.57 points, or 1.84 percent, at 882.67. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> gave up 37.74 points, or 2.41 percent, at 1,527.74.
