Wall Street cuts gains after grim GM sales

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks sharply pared gains on Tuesday after General Motors Corp posted a 41 percent slide in November auto sales, compounding investors' worries about the fate of the embattled U.S. auto industry.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was up 67.06 points, or 0.82 percent, at 8,216.15. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was up 10.45 points, or 1.28 percent, at 826.66. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was up 17.51 points, or 1.25 percent, at 1,415.58.

Earlier, indexes had risen by more than 3 percent.
