EU in provisional deal to cut car emissions: source

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union has struck a broad, provisional deal on cutting greenhouse gas emissions from cars in the battle against climate change, a source in the negotiations said on Monday.

Carbon dioxide emissions from new cars will be cut by around 18 percent to 130 grams per kilometer, in a phased approach starting in 2012, the source told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

The deal will have to be backed by the European Parliament and heads of EU governments before becoming law.
